Today we went to Menor’s Ferry to explore what early euro-american settlers of the Jackson Hole area would have experienced. We planned out what we would bring and where would would live and then we explored the General Store, ferry and transportation museum. After lunch, we headed over to Teton Science School’s Kelly Campus to build our own miniature ferries. In small teams, we collected sticks, leaves and pine cones near Ditch Creek and then used hot glued them together to construct a boat. First thing tomorrow, we’ll go race them down a creek!
Follow-up question: What are some things to consider if you were a settler heading to Jackson Hole in 1894? (hint: what to bring, where to build your homestead)
Answer: bringing lots of medicine and tools, homestead near water or food or timber or floodplains.
